Everything you need to know about Apple’s 2018 iPhone announcement

It’s the biggest annual event for the Apple-obsessed, and as your tech-loving insurer of choice we’ve read through all the analysis paralysis of the Apple announcement to just bring you the need-to-knows.

Here goes!

Products launched, in a nutshell

Three new iPhones

  • iPhone XS Max
  • iPhone XS
  • iPhone XR models

and a new watch, the Apple Watch Series 4

What’s so exciting about the new Apple Watch?

Besides basically wearing Big Brother on your wrist, the Apple Watch Series 4 also:

  • Has a 30% larger screen
  • Is thinner than previous models
  • Features customisable watch faces
  • Sends notifications when your heart rate is too low, or if your heart rhythm is irregular. Whether it sends it to your mother or the doctor we suppose is up to you.
  • It can also tell if you’ve taken a hard fall, which will trigger an option to make an emergency call
  • Features a new sensor that makes it possible to measure ECG, something that’s never been possible before in a consumer device.

The Apple Watch Series 4 GPS will be available in South Africa from 28 September 2018. The Nike+ version will be available from 5 October.

Goodbye iPhone home button

Continuing the trend launched with the iPhone X, none of the three phones Apple announced today have the iPhone’s hallmark home button.

The headphone jack dies a gory death

In case you’d just started enjoying the hideous iPhone jack adaptor, you’ll need to start treating it like gold, because Apple will stop shipping free headphone jack adaptors with new iPhones this year. None of the new iPhones have a new headphone jack. Good luck keeping track of your wireless headphones everyone!

What you need to know about the three new phones

Two of them cost more than $1000. Which makes no difference in SA as iPhones here cost as much as a house anyway (good reason to insure them *wink wink*).

BUT you can order them in gold!

The XS is an updated version of last year’s iPhone X, with better water resistance, better sound, and fine-tuned Face ID.

The iPhone XS Max is the exact same phone except enormous. It has a 6.5-inch screen and is the biggest phone Apple has ever made.

The iPhone XR is more or less identical to the XS except that it’s a bit cheaper, and comes in 6 festive colours (or if you don’t consider black or white festive, make that 4.)
